Sun and Fog in San Francisco
Yesterday it was 88 degrees in San Francisco, except if you happened to be right along Ocean Beach, where the fog rolled in with a vengeance. The contrast in weather between the financial district and the beach was extreme. The fog bank hugged Queen Wilhelmina's windmill, and made the guests at a wedding a little more comfortable in their wool suits.

But a little fog never stopped anybody in San Francisco, right? Certainly not the revelers at Ocean Beach, who showed up in great numbers to enjoy the pea soup fog and soft sand.

And everywere I looked, I saw Baby Boomers with surfboards. I guess that's because people my age can't afford to live here and have time to surf.

A raucous rugby game was underway, shirts vs no shirts, with the sole female player safely ensconced on the "shirts" team.

A short trot into Golden Gate Park, the sun broke through around Spreckels lake. This lake is usually teeming with model sailboats, but not today for some reason. I'll return some other time when they're having races and get some pictures. Today it was quiet and occupied only by ducks and turtles.

After catching a muni bus back to downtown, I stopped in Macy's on Union Square to buy a hat. From the Macy's windows you get a great view of the recently renovated square. It's now fully refurbished and ready for anyone who needs to hold a protest or rally--in fact, it was designed specifically for that purpose. Contrast that to some cities back east where protestors are confined to chain-link cages....

Above Union Square is the Starlight Room. I remember going there with my friend Maren the night before her wedding. Lovely views from the top, but the service was, as I recall, absolutely awful. They actually accused us of not paying as we tried to leave. Of course we had, and I haven't been back since.

One of the things I like about big cities is the sidewalk flower shops. San Francisco doesn't disappoint...here's one by Union Square.

I got a good workout walking from the Park up to the Sutro Heights. However, I saw a number of new neighborhoods to explore from the bus on my way back downtown. For such a tiny city, San Francisco is endlessly amusing.
